Briefly trace the process of German unification?

Answer:
The different stages of German unification are as under:
- Frankfurt Assembly: To unite Germany and to frame constitution for united Germany a constitutional Assembly met at Frankfurt in 1848. This Assembly proposed the unification of Germany under the king of Prussia. But the Prussian king declined the offer.
- War against Denmark in 1864 AD: Otto von Bismarck the prime minister of Prussia decide to unite Germany. He followed the policy of "Blood and Iron" and Astute diplomacy to unite Germany. He allied with Austria and defeated Denmark in 1864 and took control of schleswing.
- War against Austria in 1866: Bismarck defeated Austria in the Battle of Sadowa in 1866 and Annexed the territories of Holstein, Luxemburg, Frankfurt etc.
- War against France in 1870-1871:- In 1870 AD Otto von defeated France and occupied Alsace, and I Lorraine. Latter other German states join the German confederation. Finally Kaisar William I, the Prussian king was proclaimed the German emperor in January 1871.
Thus Otto von Bismarck became the chief architect of German unification.
